Reading
Initially reading is closely linked to the teaching of phonics. Children read books linked to the sounds that they are
learning in phonics. We use a range of different schemes in order to foster interest, have variety and have a wider
choice.

Additionally and subsequently reading books are banded according to ability. Books in the different bands are
selected from a range of schemes as well as carefully matched free readers. Free readers ensure that children
are exposed to a wider range of text types; thereby appealing to the interests of our many different children.
They also encourage children to make choices independently.
