Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 Team, where everyone is nurtured to become the best that they can be!

Miss Todd and Miss Beddow are our teachers. Mrs Seal and Miss Knaggs are our teaching assistants who support us with our learning.

Each day begins with a hearty breakfast with toast, crumpets and cereal on offer. Every Friday, we have a real treat; a hot sandwich to warm our tummies! Be sure to arrive before 8.45, if you want to enjoy this meal with your friends.

Learning to read is of the upmost importance to us in Year 2. As a result, we enjoy a 3x Read; where we read the same text 3 times in the week in order to build a very clear understanding. We also have a reading comprehension session each week and work with a partner to answer a range of different questions.  Our reading diaries are where we record all of our home reading and these must be present in school every day. We expect that all children read at least x3 each week at home but are delighted that we have many children who read much more than this! Our little book worms!

Following our reading session, we have an English lesson which focusses on learning to write and develop an understanding of grammar and punctuation. We also complete one extended piece of writing each week, in addition to writing across the curriculum during our topic lessons.

After playtime, we enjoy our Maths lessons. In Year 2, we build upon basic place value knowledge to enable the children to add, subtract, multiply and divide by the end of the year. The children also learn their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. We also explore shape, space, measures and statistics throughout the year. Once these skills are secured, the children then ‘master’ these skills through reasoning and problem solving activities.

Just before lunch, we have a phonics/spelling session which follows our customised Roseberry Phonics Programme. These sessions give us an appetite, just in time for our delicious lunches!

Straight after our afternoon register, we have a brain boosting arithmetic or grammar session to kick start our afternoons followed by an exciting topic, science or RE lesson; widening our knowledge and understanding of the world. These sessions, answer the questions the children have asked at the start of the half term, personalising our curriculum to the interests of our children.

Afternoon play is followed by an assembly or hymn practise where we gather in the hall with the whole of KS1. On Fridays, we attend a whole school celebration assembly and find out which class has the best attendance and who has achieved pupil of the week. Classes are rewarded for arriving at school on time and staying on green all week with vouchers; we are working hard to save up as many as we can for an extra special treat at the end of the school year.

We love Friday afternoons, when we have our weekly Golden Time Reward which is chosen by the children. At the end of each half term, we have our end of term treat which the children earn by following the golden rules and rights respecting school charter. We are keen to stay on green!

Homework is distributed to children each week on a Friday. It is due back the following Wednesday. Each child has their own homework book, which includes their basic skills homework. Enriching the learning experience is extremely important to us so we offer the children a creative homework challenge to complete linked to their topic (in addition to their basic skills homework). We are always amazed by the range of creative outcomes which are returned. Regularly, we like to broaden our experiences and take the children on educational visits to enhance their learning.
