At Roseberry, we place a strong emphasis on promoting healthy lifestyles and helping our children understand the importance of looking after their physical and mental well-being. Through our curriculum and wider personal development offer, children develop the knowledge, skills and habits needed to lead healthy, active lives. Our approach is built around five key components of physical health: high-quality PE lessons, a healthy school environment, outdoor activity, health education and extra-curricular opportunities. Together, these elements provide children with a strong foundation for lifelong physical well-being.
Every child receives two high-quality PE lessons each week, providing opportunities to develop physical competence, confidence and enjoyment in a wide range of activities. Where appropriate, Key Stage 2 pupils also access swimming lessons as part of the National Curriculum. Our progressive PE curriculum enables children to revisit and build upon prior learning, strengthening fundamental movement skills, developing tactical understanding and promoting teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship.
At Roseberry, we are committed to creating an environment that supports healthy choices. Children have access to nutritious school meals, alongside fresh drinking water throughout the day. We actively promote healthy eating and encourage balanced packed lunches where applicable. Good hygiene practices are embedded into the school day, with regular opportunities for handwashing and sanitising. Through our wider school culture, we encourage children to understand the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices that positively impact both their physical and emotional well-being.
Our outdoor spaces provide children with daily opportunities to be physically active during breaktimes and lunchtimes. Playgrounds are equipped to encourage active play through a variety of games, sports and physical challenges suitable for different age groups. Staff support and encourage active participation, ensuring children engage safely and positively with one another. Outdoor learning opportunities and physical activity are further enhanced through planned activities, promoting enjoyment, teamwork and healthy lifestyles.
Health education is delivered through our PSHE curriculum and reinforced across a range of subjects, including Science. Children learn about healthy eating, exercise, personal hygiene, sleep, emotional well-being, healthy relationships and making informed choices. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build understanding year on year, enabling children to develop the knowledge and confidence to make positive decisions about their health. Throughout the school day, children also benefit from regular movement and 'brain break' activities, helping to improve concentration, regulate emotions and support overall well-being.
Roseberry offers a broad and varied programme of extra-curricular activities that encourage children to remain active, discover new interests and develop new skills. Clubs may include a range of sporting, creative and wellbeing activities, delivered by school staff and, where appropriate, specialist providers. The programme is reviewed regularly to reflect children's interests and provide a wide range of opportunities for participation and personal development.
These five components underpin our commitment to developing physical literacy across the school. Through high-quality teaching, active play and a wide range of enrichment opportunities, children develop the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and enjoy being active. Our aim is to inspire every child to lead a healthy, active lifestyle both now and in the future.
