    At Roseberry, we want every child to experience success in every science lesson and develop the knowledge, skills and curiosity to understand and explore the world around them.

    We believe that science should be engaging, inclusive and accessible to all pupils. Our curriculum is designed to nurture children's natural curiosity whilst developing a secure understanding of the key scientific concepts, knowledge and vocabulary set out in the National Curriculum. Through carefully planned learning experiences, pupils build their understanding of biology, chemistry and physics, recognising the connections between these disciplines and their relevance to everyday life.

    Science at Roseberry encourages children to ask questions, make predictions, investigate ideas and develop evidence-based explanations. We aim to foster a spirit of enquiry so that pupils become confident in thinking scientifically, solving problems and making informed decisions about the world around them.

    Working Scientifically is embedded throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to progressively develop the disciplinary knowledge and practical skills required to carry out scientific enquiry. Children are provided with regular opportunities to:

    • ask scientific questions and make predictions
    • plan and carry out fair and comparative tests, observations over time, pattern seeking, identifying and classifying, and research using secondary sources
    • observe, measure and record accurately using appropriate scientific equipment
    • analyse and interpret evidence to draw conclusions
    • evaluate investigations and consider the reliability of evidence
    • communicate their scientific understanding using accurate scientific vocabulary in both spoken and written forms

    We have high expectations for all pupils and ensure that learning is appropriately adapted so that every child can achieve success and make strong progress. Practical enquiry is used purposefully to deepen conceptual understanding rather than as an end in itself, enabling pupils to develop secure knowledge alongside the skills of scientific investigation.

    Ultimately, we aim to develop scientifically literate learners who are curious, reflective and confident in applying their scientific knowledge to new situations. By the time they leave Roseberry, pupils will understand the importance of science in everyday life and appreciate its role in shaping the future of individuals, communities and the wider world.
