    Promoting Fundamental British Values

    At Roseberry, we are committed to promoting the Fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. In line with Department for Education guidance, we ensure that pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to thrive as active, responsible citizens in modern Britain.

    We encourage all pupils to value diversity, respect others and appreciate that while individuals may hold different beliefs and opinions, everyone living in England is subject to the same laws and has the same rights and responsibilities.

    Fundamental British Values are woven throughout our curriculum, assemblies, enrichment opportunities and personal development programme, enabling pupils to develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of belonging within their community and beyond.

    Democracy

    Democracy is about ensuring that everyone has a voice and understands the importance of participation, fairness and responsibility.

    At Roseberry, pupils experience democracy through:

    • Pupil leadership opportunities, including School Council and pupil ambassadors.

    • Voting for representatives and making collective decisions.

    • Classroom discussions and debates where every voice is valued.

    • Providing and responding to feedback.

    • Developing leadership, teamwork and accountability.

    The Rule of Law

    Pupils learn that laws and rules exist to protect everyone and create safe, respectful communities.

    This is promoted through:

    • Clear behaviour expectations and consistent routines.

    • Understanding school rules, rights and responsibilities.

    • Learning about local and national laws.

    • Visits from external agencies, including the police and emergency services where appropriate.

    • Exploring how laws help keep individuals and communities safe.

    Individual Liberty

    We encourage pupils to make informed choices, develop independence and understand both their rights and their responsibilities.

    Pupils learn about:

    • Making safe and responsible choices.

    • Equality, human rights and personal freedoms.

    • Developing confidence and resilience.

    • Respecting personal boundaries and consent.

    • Recognising that freedom comes with responsibility for ourselves and others.

    Mutual Respect and Tolerance

    Roseberry is an inclusive school where everyone is valued and treated with dignity. We actively promote understanding, empathy and respect for people from all backgrounds, cultures, faiths and beliefs.

    Pupils develop this understanding through:

    • Learning about different religions, cultures and traditions.

    • Celebrating diversity through the curriculum and wider school life.

    • Challenging stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.

    • Promoting kindness, inclusion and positive relationships.

    • Understanding that different beliefs and opinions should be respected, provided they do not conflict with the values of equality, respect and the law.

    The promotion of Fundamental British Values is not confined to discrete lessons; it is embedded throughout daily life at Roseberry. Through our curriculum, personal development programme, assemblies, enrichment activities and positive relationships, pupils develop the confidence, character and understanding needed to become respectful, responsible and active members of society.

    We recognise that modern Britain is diverse, and we seek to broaden pupils' understanding of the wider world beyond their immediate experiences. By providing meaningful opportunities to explore different cultures, communities and perspectives, we prepare our pupils to contribute positively to an increasingly diverse and interconnected society.
