Teaching Assistant (Band 6) – SEND/SEMH (The Nest Provision) – Internal Applications Only
Contract Type: Permanent
Grade: Band 6 (£25,989, Term time only plus 5 days, Pro-rata – actual salary £22,453.72)
Hours: 37 Hours
Start Date: September 2026
Location: One of two Nest provisions within the school
About the Role
This is a permanent specialist support role based within one of the school’s Nest provisions, working with pupils who present with SEND and SEMH needs, including trauma-related behaviours and significant emotional regulation difficulties.
The role focuses on delivering high-quality, structured support that enables pupils to engage with learning, regulate behaviour, and make meaningful progress academically, socially and emotionally.
While systems and provision are in place, their effectiveness depends on consistent, skilled adults. This role is critical in ensuring those systems operate with impact.
You will work with oversight from teaching staff but will be expected to operate with a high degree of professional judgement, resilience and initiative, including providing short-term emergency cover using pre-planned learning and behaviour strategies.
This is not a general classroom role. It is specialist, demanding work that requires confidence, emotional intelligence and absolute consistency.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver targeted teaching and learning support to individuals and small groups, adapting activities within agreed parameters to meet pupils’ needs.
- Implement behaviour support plans, risk assessments and de-escalation strategies consistently and confidently.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, social communication and self-management using trauma-informed and attachment-aware approaches.
- Contribute to a calm, structured and purposeful learning environment where expectations for behaviour and engagement are clear.
- Provide short-term emergency class supervision in line with Band 6 responsibilities, using pre-planned work.
- Maintain accurate records, logs and reports relating to behaviour, safeguarding and pupil progress.
- Support pupils’ personal care, independence, wellbeing and safety where required.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, leaders, external professionals and families to ensure consistent approaches and positive outcomes.
- Uphold safeguarding, confidentiality and professional standards at all times.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a professional who:
- Holds NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
- Has proven experience supporting pupils with SEMH and SEND, ideally within a nurture provision, SEND base, inclusion unit or alternative provision.
- Demonstrates a secure understanding of trauma-informed practice, attachment, safeguarding and contextual risk.
- Can work calmly and effectively in high-pressure, emotionally demanding situations.
- Is confident implementing behaviour strategies, including physical intervention where necessary and appropriately trained.
- Demonstrates strong organisation, clear communication and the ability to work within a disciplined, professional team.
- Maintains clear professional boundaries while building positive, trusting relationships with vulnerable pupils.
This Role Will Suit
- An experienced Teaching Assistant ready to step into a Band 6 specialist role, or
- A practitioner currently working in SEND/SEMH provision seeking greater responsibility, structure and professional challenge.
This role will suit someone who understands that consistency changes outcomes and who is prepared to deliver that consistently every day.
In Return, We Offer
- A strong, supportive and inclusive school ethos
- A talented and hardworking staff team
- A clear commitment to school improvement and staff development
